NFC Central

A few weeks from making my predictions for the year and everything is up in the air.  Like many I had liked the direction the Detroit Lions were headed.   The problem is they are getting hammered by injuries.  First first round pick Nick Farley with the surgery on is leg and now 2nd rounder Mikel LeShoure goes down this morning with the achilles injury.  He is out for the season.  The combo of LeShoure and Best looked pretty intimidating.........

First Matt Millen and now the run of bad luck.......

Poor Lions.

Not Much Going On

Not much to say about the family night festivities.  Did not really get to see anything because of the rain.  I guess the one thing is James Starks.  The reports that he has stood out appear to be valid.  He looked powerful and very fast.  I think their will be a platoon all season with perhaps Starks getting a little more of the split.  That running back group is going to be special.

I found this salary cap info on a pro sports daily message board.  It looks complete and accurate.  It is a credit to the organization to have the team depth and money available.

Reports of Derek Sherrod's struggle at guard appear to have been premature.  It sounds like he is starting to get it.  He, Randall Cobb and Alex Green will surely contribute this year.

I am starting to get anxious about the season.

The Clowns Weigh In

I do not have a major problem with someone ranking the Packers as the  4th best team going into the 2011 season.  I disagree with him but that isn't my complaint.  The issue is his reasoning.

"It was actually tough to put the Defending Super Bowl champions this high in the rankings due to some questionable free-agency moves."

This dude has clearly not been paying attention to Green Bay.  This offseason is textbook to the way Ted Thompson built the championship team.  He refused to overpay for anyone on the decline and locked up his own free-agents that he really wanted.  If this rank maker or anyone else was expecting him to load up on other peoples free players............Bahahahahahahahaha.  That is not part of the plan.   Charles Woodson is the only major free agent TT has brought in.

I not only do not buy is points about the offensive line, I think he is dead wrong.  He calls Tauscher, Colledge and Spitz three of their bet offensive lineman from the 2010 season.

That claim is about as lazy as it can get.  The only starter in the group listed is Colledge.  How did Mike McCarthy win a ring having two of his best lineman on the bench?  Colledge was a below average run blocker and will be replaced without a big problem.  I think it is going to be one of three people filling that spot in this order.  Derek Sherrod, T.J. Lang or Bryan Bulaga. (with Sherrod then taking his tackle spot)  I think the O-line will be as good if not better.

Time will tell and I am not making my picks yet but if I had to rank teams in the NFC right now I would flip a coin between Green Bay and the Saints for first.  I would put the Eagles third and Atlanta fourth.

I can't wait for the scrimmage tonight.

Let's Get it Started in Here

The Packers have their annual family night scrimmage tomorrow night.  I will take that as a sign that it is time to start talking Packers.  Today I will just be rambling about some random thoughts.  If you think that none of this goes together you are right.

I did not care at all which side won or lost the labor dispute.  I just wanted it to be over.  The one thing that I really like about the new agreement is the new rookie payroll pool.  That is a win for both sides.  It no longer forces the bad teams to put so many eggs into the basket of the unproven.  If Cam Newton would have gotten the 60 million under the old rules that would have ruined Carolina when he flops.  Terrible teams are not good for the league.

I am so excited about this Packer season.  I heard LeRoy Butler say something on AM1250 that was very interesting.  He basically said that the Pack did not add a high end OLB to complement Clay Matthews by design.  The three guys up for that position are exactly what they want.  They want a guy just to fill the role.  Spending big cash there is not needed.  The entire world seem to have been calling for a big name addition.  To think the Packers never considered it much is interesting.

I am as big a Ted Thompson fan as you will find.  His skill in the draft and his discipline is remarkable.  That said I think this draft is going to go down as really good.  The picks of Randall Cobb and Alex Green are the two I am most intrigued with.  Early reports on Cobb re very encouraging.  I think his main purpose was the return game.  They liked his receiving ability but I think long term he is going to be better than most think.  It will be fun to watch that guy develop.  Alex Green is going to be the 3rd down back this year.  I have a feeling he is going to end up being a star.  His college highlight tapes blow me away.

The three headed backfield will be the best the Packers have put on the field in my lifetime. (1970)  All three are big and can run.  The skill sets of these guys seem to be unreal.  I think the Packers are going to pound the crap out of the ball this year.  I am not sure what the team record for rushing yards is.  I would not be surprised if it changes this year.

First round pick Derek Sherrod should be a solid addition.  I am a little surprised they re giving him the shot at starting LG.  He doe not seem to fit the profile.  He is tall and big.  (although he lost weight and reported at 312lbs.)  It seems LG is usually a stockier guy with the rep of a nasty dude.  I would think Bryan Bulaga or T.J. Lang fits better.  Who knows?  Probably the coach and the GM.  I trust those dudes.

I just watched some highlights of rookie D.J. Williams catchng two T'D's in drills lat night.  That group could be down right silly.  The Packers have featured the TE for the longest time.  The weapons on this offense are silly.

More to come.  Cheers

Great Aaron Rodgers Super Bowl Story

I read this on the Yahoo blog "Shutdown Corner".

"We walked out for the coin toss and at the Super Bowl there are these long TV timeouts, so we go out for the coin toss. I'm one of the captains," he told the same station. "There's five of us. The Steelers' guys are standing over there and we're standing looking at each other for a good three minutes. Well over to the left, about 10 camera men have been trying to get in place for the best shot and two of them are fighting. They're yelling at each other in different languages, flipping each other off and one guy is flipping him off and the other guy below him is just taking all of these pictures of him. The guy above is flipping off the little guy down below, who is kind of squeezed in to get the lowest spot … They're both screaming at the other and taking pictures of each other for a good minute and a half and I'm tapping [linebacker] A.J. [Hawk] like, "Look at that over there! Look at those guys!' It was unbelievable."

Bears Interested in Cullen Jenkins?

The following was reported in the Chicago Tribune.

Even after a second-round draft pick was used on Oregon State’s Stephen Paea, there likely will be some reinforcements for the defensive line. The Bears will need to make a better offer to retain tackle Anthony Adams and as the Tribune’s Dan Pompei wrote in February, Green Bay Packers veteran Cullen Jenkins could be targeted. He has had some injuries over the last three seasons, but is coming off one of his most productive seasons.

I would have mixed feelings about this.  I am a big fan of Jenkins.  Him playing in a Bears uniform would not be all that sweet.  On the other hand the Bears would be taking on a great deal of risk of injury and they surely would have to overpay.  Chicago already is aging on defense, this would give them another big money guy with some wear and tear.

It is also sad to think Jenkins would probably end his career in Chicago.  He has been a hardworking, productive part of a very good team.  He seems like he is a pretty good dude.  It's kind of a bummer to think he will never be a champion again.
